    Climate Change

Climate change poses perhaps the greatest threat, and the greatest challenge, that modern society has ever faced. As more and more CO2 is pumped into the atmosphere the planet is warming, bringing with it the threat of rising sea levels, increased flooding, increased drought, extreme whether patterns and mass extinction of both plant and animal life and the ecosystems they, and we, depend on.

    The facts

    • Warming of the climate system is unequivocal
    • Global GHG emissions due to human activities have grown since pre-industrial times
    • There is very high confidence that the global average net effect of human activities since 1750 has been one of warming
    • Anthropogenic warming could lead to some impacts that are abrupt or irreversible

    Consumerism and climate change

We’ve all got used to the messages to fly less, leave the car at home, turn down our thermostat and recycle our waste. But what about all the products that we buy, clothes, tea, food, gadgets, all of these have their own carbon footprint.

Nearly every time we buy something we are contributing to climate change and so it is vitally important that we take responsibility for what we buy, where we buy it, and how we buy it.

    Consumerism and climate change

    Watch what you buy

Have you ever thought about the impact of things you buy?

    What we buy:

By thinking about what you’re doing each time you shop you can make informed decisions about what you buy.

    • - Where has it come from?
    • - What’s it made of?
    • - Is it organic?
    • - Do I really need this?
    • - Is it recycled?
    • - Does it have unnecessary packaging?

    Where we buy:

The emissions from retailing are some of the biggest in the UK, by being selective about where we shop we can help reduce this:

    • - Shop locally
    • - Read up about your retailers and the efforts they are making to reduce their impact

    How we buy:

There are simple changes you can make to your shopping routine to become more eco friendly

    • - Walk, cycle or get the bus to the supermarket
    • - Save the effort and order online and get it delivered
    • - Take your own bags

    Buy carbon neutral

You can make substantial reduction in your carbon footprint by considering what, where and how you buy. However, there will always be unavoidable emissions, so what can you do about these?

We can reduce as much as possible but we still need to eat, we still need clothes and some appliances we just can’t do without. So after you’ve reduced all you can, the next step is to offset the rest.

Buying a Piqqo carbon neutral product means that all of the emissions of that product have been carefully calculated and then offset using one of our verified projects.

As well as displaying the carbon footprint of your product, each label also allows you to trace exactly where your offset has come from. This means you can see the project in action and understand the other social and environmental benefits behind it.

Our website also gives you a clear breakdown of the carbon footprint, so you can understand where the emissions are coming from, you can also check out what that company is doing to keep this footprint as low as possible.
